GENERAL INFORMATION

 

LOCATION

 The North Texas Middle School Percussion Camp will be held at Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas.

 

ELIGIBILITY

 Participation in the North Texas Middle School Percussion Camp is offered to those students entering the 7th or 8th grade. Participants will greatly benefit from our programs regardless of their level of attainment or proficiency. Enrollment will be limited to the first 100 participants.

 

FEE

Camp fee is $150.00 with meals or $140.00 without meals. This is due with your registration form. All fees are due by the entry deadline. No refunds after June 1, 2024.

 

SCHEDULE

The camp will run from 9:00AM – 4:00PM daily (lunch 12:00PM-1PM). The afternoon concert on the final day will begin at 4:30 PM.

 

FOOD

All lunch meals will be provided by the camp staff. Students are welcome to bring their own lunch if they desire. Vendors include Chick-Filet, Domino's Pizza, and Jason's Deli.

 

CONCERT

There will be a 4:30 PM afternoon concert on the last day of camp which will feature the student percussion ensembles.

 

WHAT TO BRING  

Sticks, mallets. stick bag, percussion kit (with pad/bells), and a GREAT ATTITUDE! The camp will provide mallet instruments for those students who do not own one.

THE ARTIST FACULTY

 

Mark Biggs holds a Bachelors and Masters in Music Education from the University of North Texas. He has worked as a writer, arranger, and clinician for the Marcus H. S. drum lines and percussion ensembles for more than 16 years. He spends his summers writing arranging and teaching percussion in the North Texas area. A former middle school and high school band director, Mark now teaches math to hard-to-reach students in Birdville ISD.

 

John Bingaman currently serves as Assistant Band Director and Director of Percussion Studies for John Horn High School in Mesquite, TX.  The John Horn Drumline has experienced notable success with consistent top finishes in the HEB Drumline Contest, the Plano Drumline Competition, and the Lonestar Drumline Contest while also being awarded caption awards for snares, tenors, basses, and front ensemble.  John Horn has won the Lonestar Drumline Contest 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 while achieving the highest drumline score in the advanced divisions in 2012-14.  Mr. Bingaman is also in his fourteenth season as a percussionist with the Allen Philharmonic Orchestra where he also performed a marimba concerto in 2004.  He is also an active drumset player and clinician in the DFW area.  In addition, Mr. Bingaman is on the staff of the Roll Models Percussion Summer Camps.

 

Bill Bachman is a percussionist. Bill has marched and tech'd for DCI Corps including The Cadets, Blue Knights, Carolina Crown, Magic of Orlando and many more. He studied Berklee University and the University of North Texas.

Bill is an author of rudimental marching percussion literature (see below), and is the designer of Vic Firth's Heavy Hitter Pads. He an endorser of Dynasty drums, Remo Drumheads, Zildjian cymbals, and Vic Firth sticks & mallets.

In addition to his regular work as a clinician, teacher, and educator around the US, Bill teaches internationally via Skype and through his website, Drumworkout.com. The site is a new take on the online lesson format which focuses not on simply teaching ideas, but actually presenting them in a 'workout' format so that users can practice along with Bill.

 

Jon Lee is an Adjunct Lecturer of Percussion at the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University and is the Director of the Meadows Percussion Ensemble. He is an active performer, educator, clinician, and adjudicator. He is Principal Timpanist of the Garland Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Arlington, and the Las Colinas Symphony Orchestras. He performs regularly with the Dallas Wind Symphony, Plano Symphony Orchestra, East Texas Orchestra, Richardson Symphony Orchestra, Lewisville Lake Symphony Orchestra, Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra and many others. Jon has been on the faculty of the University of Texas at Arlington, the Stephen F. Austin Percussion Symposium, Marimba Madness, and the Leigh Howard Stevens Pre-College Marimba Seminar.

 

Kennan Wylie holds a Bachelors and Masters degree in Music Education from the University of North Texas. He was an adjunct professor of percussion at University of Arlington for ten years and is currently the Percussion Instructor at Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas.Under his direction over the past 22 years, the Marcus group has received national acclaim both on and off the field, including 11 national championship titles at the P.A.S.I.C. Marching Competition. Marcus H.S. also won the 1999, 2003, and 2011 P.A.S. "Call for Tapes". K. Wylie Publications has a full line of beginning percussionist instructional books, solos, and ensembles. "Simple Steps" is the instructional series written by Kennan Wylie. He has presented clinics at the Texas Music Educators Association convention, Percussive Arts Society International Convention, and for the Texas Percussive Arts Society.
